Common Nutrition Myths Cleared Up
Some of the myths created around the health and fitness field are a dime a dozen. Some a true. Some a plain made-up wild guess’ at everything from calories to exercises. Today we will look at some of the nutrition-related myths and set them straight!
Eating after 8pm makes you fat!
Nope! Over-eating makes you fat! Calories eaten after 8pm are less likely to be used up as immediate energy BUT they are still used as energy. Remember you need calories to survive, even when you’re sleeping, often an overlooked factor when creating a diet plan. As long as you burn more calories than you take in, you WILL lose weight!
Eating fat makes you fat!
Wrong again! Our body actually needs fat, the good kind that it. The good fats we are after are those found in foods such as seeds, nuts and oily fish. These contain omega-3 fatty acids which actually help us lose weight, and have hugely beneficial health benefits such as reducing heart disease and enhancing joint recovery. Keep away from any fat that is still solid at room temperature, as chances are this will clog up your arteries and sky-rocket your cholesterol!
Protein shakes help you lose weight!
Correct! Protein shakes have several key features that make them so popular. Firstly is their muscle building characteristics, and that’s why athletes and bodybuilders use them. But secondly they are a great weight loss supplement when trying not to snack in between meals, and to keep your appetite under control.
Fasting or starving yourself is a good way to lose weight!
Complete nonsense! Research shows that fasting, although helpful at first, does not decrease body weight in the long term, and is incredibly dangerous to your health. During fasting/starving, your body switches to starvation mode. This is a dangerous mode to be in when trying to lose weight because your brain tells your body to store any food you do eat as body fat. This is because it becomes accustomed to having no food or energy at all. Also fasting for a long time lowers your metabolism, causing you to pile on the pounds when you begin to eat again.
If you want to be big, you have to eat loads of meat!
As they say, ‘Variety is the spice of life!’, and the same is relevant when it comes to your diet. You need variety! Yes, meats such as chicken and turkey are good source’s of protein as is beef (which is also a good natural source of Creatine). But you need to consume so much more to get the physique you’ve always wanted. Remember your carbohydrates for energy, as well as your healthy fats. You can get a lot of your needed daily intake of vitamins and minerals from fruit and vegetables.
